Ham Stock Ingredients and Steps

This Homemade Ham Stock enhances the flavor of many Southern dishes. It's a great base for soups and gravies.

Nothing beats homemade ham bone broth; there's no substitute that matches its flavor.

bacon grease – olive oil – small leek – onion – celery – carrots – garlic – ham bone – parsley – thyme – bay leaves – black peppercorns

Ingredients For Making This Ham Stock

Preheat The Stockpot

In a large stockpot over medium-high heat, heat bacon fat and olive oil. Cook leek, onion, celery, carrot, and garlic stirring often until tender and golden.

Add The Ingredients

Add ham bone, parsley, thyme, bay leaves and peppercorns to the pot. Cover with water until it's about above the top of the bone.

Simmer

Simmer uncovered until the stock is flavorful and fragrant. You should have about a quart of rich stock.

Strain The Stock

Strain stock through a fine-mesh sieve into a large bowl. Discard solids except for the larger pieces of ham that have fallen from the bone.
